Excessive pilosity, called hirsutism in medical terms, consists in the excessive growth of hair on the whole body, in case of females. Pilosity appears in areas usually characteristic to men. The hair is thick and black and grows quite quickly once it is removed by various methods such as hair removal.

Hirsutism is a consequence of excessive secretion of male hormone (testosterone) in the body. Normally, women have small amounts of testosterone secreted by the ovaries and adrenal glands.

Symptoms

Pilosity appears in various areas such as upper lip, cheeks, sideburns area, neck, chest, abdomen, thighs and around the nipples. On the face, there is the mustache or beard. The hair is black, thick, with strong roots and grows quickly. Women suffering from hirsutism can have an irregular menstrual cycle or may have acne on their face. They may also have difficulties getting pregnant.

Medical Treatment

Treatment depends strictly on the causes of hirsutism. If the condition is mild and in addition, you do not show an irregular menstrual cycle, your problem may not need medical treatment.

On the other hand, if you have irregular menstruation, accompanied by acne or obesity, your doctor should prescribe a medicine that contains female hormones to solve the pilosity problem and menstrual disorders.

If hirsutism is caused by suprarenal or ovarian tumors, you have to remove them by surgery.

Response to treatment can extend on period from 6 to 12 months. During that time, excess hair can be removed by various cosmetics methods.

Cosmetic Treatment

There are various ways to remove unwanted hair through cosmetic hair removal, tweezing or discoloration. Wax or hair removal creams are often used for hair removal. Shaving or plucking the hair with tweezers can lead to infection or the appearance of scars on that area, especially if the “operation” takes place on dry skin.

Newer methods, but also more expensive, to remove excess hair, are electrolysis and laser therapy. Electrolysis can permanently remove unwanted hair, but it is a costly and long-term therapy. Laser is the newest and is still under investigation.
