The world is facing a lot of issues regarding global warming. Furthermore, there are a lot of industries out there that are making changes to become more sustainable. One of those industries is the fashion industry and it is believed that they are responsible for 8-10% of carbon emissions.

There are many things that the fashion industry is doing however, there are things that a customer can do as well. If we are going to see any improvements, we need to ensure that we don’t keep feeding the demand of fast-fashion brands. Here are a few ways that you can do to make sure you are living a more sustainable lifestyle.

Spend Less and Save More

A problem that many brands have is producing cheap clothing of poor quality. The problem from a consumer’s point of view is supporting these brands that design poor quality clothing.

Are you one of those people that buy an item of clothing, wears it once, and is never to be seen in it again? If you are, this is a habit we recommend that you get out of, especially if you want to do your bit. Let’s be honest, we are all guilty of buying clothes, storing them in the wardrobe for a few years before throwing them away. This is one of the problems with society at the moment.

It is estimated that over 92 million tonnes of textile waste are thrown away. The majority of the time, these clothes are in great condition. Even if they are slightly damaged, the materials can be recycled.

Next time you are buying new clothes, look at items that have been around for a long time. For example, you know that denim clothing has been in fashion for a while. Avoid buying fast fashion trends to become more sustainable.

Spend More on Better Quality

Many people will buy 5 t-shirts that will cost £80 altogether. Other people believe that it is better to buy a t-shirt worth £80. These are the type of people that will wear this t-shirt without wearing it down anytime soon. Unlike the customers who pay for 5 multiple t-shirts and can only wear them a couple of times because it becomes damaged.

When shopping for clothes, target sustainable brands that design durable clothing. There are hundreds of brands out there aiming to be more sustainable. Sustainable clothing is designed to last a long time which is what several brands are aiming for with their clothes.

Shop Second-Hand

Fast fashion is the latest trend that the majority of buyers follow. However, one thing that we do suggest is avoiding those fast-fashion brands and buying your clothes from second-hand stores.

We understand that people will turn their noses up in second-hand clothing stores. Nonetheless, if you want to save a bit of money and find yourself a bargain, these are the shops we recommend. Slow fashion is the future if we want to see changes in the coming years within the fashion industry. Boycott fast fashion brands and target brands that have been within the fashion industry for several years.

Thanks to the digital world, it has become easy to shop for second-hand clothing. Websites such as eBay and Depop are great platforms that make shopping online for second-hand clothing a simple task. Additionally, brands will sell their left-over stock on these sites if they haven’t sold them already. Moreover, many second-hand shops sell vintage clothing at affordable prices. If you value your time when shopping, we advise you to shop on apps such as eBay and Depop.

To Conclude

There are many ways to be more sustainable when buying new clothing. As mentioned before, we suggest you avoid those brands that don’t aim for sustainability. Another thing we suggest is to look out for brands that sell organic clothing. That way, you know the brand priorities sustainability and being more eco-friendly.
